The overall aim of the BrinkItOn project, funded by the European Union’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (2014-2020), is to improve the social acceptance of LGBTI people in Bulgaria. Among the project’s objectives are to identify and analyse the trends and societal perceptions regarding LGBTI people by conducting research, as well as to build the capacity of the LGBTI movement for strategic planning development. During the project duration, the first LGBTI Strategic Framework and Action Plan in Bulgaria will be developed which will further be utilized to empower the LGBTI community and its allies and mobilise support for change.

PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARDS LGBTI PEOPLE IN BULGARIA

The nationally representative survey was carried out under the BrinkItOn project (On the brink of acceptance: fighting discrimination through strategic planning and empowerment of the LGBTI community in Bulgaria). Its main objective was to provide valuable and reliable information on public attitudes to serve the LGBTI community in planning communication campaigns and in arguing for the fundamental rights of LGBTI people in Bulgaria

SURVEY OF LGBTI PEOPLE IN BULGARIA, 2020

In order to provide up-to-date information on the experiences, perceptions and evaluations of LGBTI people in Bulgaria, an online survey of 420 respondents from the community was conducted between February and March 2020. Many of the indicators in the survey replicate those used in the national representative survey (which you can see HERE), in order to compare the positions of people from the community with those of society as a whole. Other indicators replicate those used in previous international surveys in order to get a real sense of possible changes in terms of basic rights for LGBTI people in the country.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE LGBTI COMMUNITY OF COVID-19

This report presents an analysis of data from an online survey conducted by GLAS and Bilitis Foundations between September and October 2020. The aim of the survey was to collect data from LGBTI people in Bulgaria on the effects of COVID-19 on their lives. The report summarises the responses of 176 people of different ages, representing different subgroups of the LGBTI community in Bulgaria.

LOVE IS FLYING OVER BULGARIA - A CAMPAIGN FOR FREE DISTRIBUTION OF RAINBOW FLAGS ON THE OCCASION OF SOFIA PRIDE 2020

In 2020, we stay at home, but keep working for equal rights and the freedom to love. Together, let's show the potential of our community - not just in the city where we usually march, but across the country.

Support Sofia Pride by hanging a rainbow-coloured flag on your window or balcony and participating in upcoming online activities. The flag is free. You only need to cover the cost of delivery with a courier of your choice or you can pick it up in person from the GLAS Foundation office in Sofia. The maximum number of flags anyone can order is 3. The deadline for orders is 5 June 2020.

THE BOOK "PEOPLE WITH A VOICE"

From the first utterance that people deserve equality, through the long debates, right up to the enactment of the law: the battle for equal rights cannot be fought quietly. It needs people with a voice. If they are not fearless, at least they are not voiceless. These are the stories of 37 individuals for LGBTI rights in Bulgaria.

CAMPAIGN "MOM, DAD, I HAVE TO TELL YOU SOMETHING" ON THE OCCASION OF THE 14TH EDITION OF SOFIA PRIDE 2021 "TOGETHER AGAIN"

Why is coming out as an LGBT person so important not only for ourselves, but also for our loved ones? Because change starts with us. If we take this sometimes difficult step, we will show our loved ones that they may be far more accepting than they think they are - because they have been accepting of us all their lives. And after disclosure, we are still the same people they have always loved.

We want to show you that there's nothing scary about saying who you are and continuing to be yourself.

CAMPAIGN "NOW WE CAN!"

Same-sex couples living together (alone or with children) can be recorded as one household in the National Population and Housing Census, which is conducted by the NSI every ten years. On the census card, anyone can indicate their partner or spouse, and this applies to everyone regardless of their gender. Yes! This means that you will be able to count yourself as a same-sex couple living together.

On this occasion, GLAS Foundation has launched a campaign with a video featuring many Bulgarians' favourite actress - Marta Vachkova.

STRATEGY OF THE LGBTI MOVEMENT IN BULGARIA 2021-2026

The first strategy of the LGBTI movement in Bulgaria "Stronger Together: a Strategic Framework for the Bulgarian LGBTI Movement 2021-2026" is the result of the joint work of the Bilitis Foundation, GLAAS, the LGBT Youth Organization "Action" and the Noema Marketing Agency and was created within the project "On the Edge of Acceptance", funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (2014-2020) of the European Union. After extensive consultation with various representatives of the LGBTI community, including over 420 participants in an online survey, 75 participants in 8 community meetings in Sofia, 34 participants in 5 meetings in the country, and 10 expert interviews, a shared vision and 5 priorities were derived, each aiming to achieve a series of concrete outcomes.
